Brain Damage (Mike Govette)

Brain Damage circa 1976, playing a 1951 Les Paul he inherited from his mom.
Born February 13th, 1951, Mike was a happy baby by all accounts.
Mike and Howard channeling the Blues Brothers at the backyard of their house in Montclair,Ca., circa 1957. I think it was really awesome that my mom posed us for this picture! I mean, how cool is that?
Mike with Howard and Julie at Del Mar Ave, Montclair, Ca. We cleaned up nicely, though we didn’t really like it…
Mike’s first band, Thee In-Keepers, 1967 Left to right: Jerry Hatch-rhythm guitar, Chris Carpenter-sax,vocals, Howard Govette-drums, Mike Winburn-bass,vocals, Mike Govette-lead guitar,vocals.

We had a blast playing in Thee In-Keepers! How many people had a sax player back then? We dressed for success and played lots of gigs. See the link below for more cool pictures (and 8mm footage!) of Thee In-Keepers.

Me at age 17, Granada Court, Ontario, Ca.

I taught myself how to play ‘Frankie and Johnnie’ on my mom’s guitar. After that, it was the Animals, Beach Boys, Grass Roots, Stones and of course, the Beatles.

It was great until I was about to be drafted. It was at the height of the Viet Nam war and my older cousin, Jerry Roseborough, recommended I volunteer for the infantry!! I joined the US Navy instead. It was a good move.

My Mom, Dixie, at our home on Granada Court, Ontario Ca. I was just out of boot camp, January 1969.

My Grandmother, Myrtle Dugan, had a tremendous influence on me as a young child. She played in an all-woman band in the 40s.
